Centurión de fibra óptica raro: posee una parte de la historia de Corvette con un pasado oscuro

El término «equipo para automóvil» tiene algunas connotaciones negativas que evocan visiones de un Pontiac Fiero haciendo todo lo posible para parecerse a un automóvil deportivo italiano. Pero hubo un tiempo en que las colecciones eran un poco mejores que eso, y lo suficientemente antiguas como para ser históricamente interesantes.

Este Centurion de fibra óptica es un buen ejemplo de la raza, y no solo se ve muy bien y no solo está en excelentes condiciones, sino que también viene con una historia de fondo oscura con intriga, traición y muerte. Pero primero, lo básico.

El Centurion fue creado por Fiberfab, una empresa multiautomóvil con sede en California que ha fabricado carrocerías para una variedad de vehículos, como el Ford Mustang, el Jaguar E-Type, el Jeep Willys y, por supuesto, el Chevrolet Corvette.

Este modelo está fuertemente inspirado en el Chevrolet XP-87, un prototipo experimental que definiría gran parte del diseño del C2 Corvette. Construido en 1959, el concepto fue acuñado por Bill Mitchell, Pete Brock y Larry Shinoda. Sin embargo, su leyenda se solidificó en la pista de carreras cuando ganó el Campeonato SCCA en 1960, con Dick Thompson al volante.

El diseño llamó la atención de Warren «Bud» Goodwin, fundador de Fiberfab, quien finalmente puso en producción el Centurion. La idea tenía sentido. Al igual que el XP-87, el Centurion fue diseñado para adaptarse al chasis del C1 Corvette y la carrocería estaba hecha de fibra de vidrio.

El diseño era tan similar, cuenta la leyenda, que Chevrolet planeaba enviar una orden de cese y desistimiento a Fiberfab. Sin embargo, la empresa no tuvo la oportunidad porque Goodwin estaba a punto de tener algunos problemas personales.

Fue en ese momento que Goodwin supuestamente entró a su casa un día y encontró a su esposa, Jamaica, en la cama con uno de sus mecánicos. Las circunstancias exactas son oscuras, pero Godwin disparó y mató a su esposa, en lo que luego sería acusado de asesinato en primer grado en la corte.

Este puede ser el único en Europa, ya que se compró en una subasta de Barrett-Jackson en 2018 y se exportó a Andorra, por artcurial, que se encarga de la subasta de este modelo. Además, afirma que este es el único ejemplo conocido que tiene reposacabezas.

El automóvil completamente restaurado está propulsado por un motor V8 de 4.6 litros con una potencia nominal de 283 PS (211 kW / 287 PS). En perfectas condiciones, la casa de subastas estima que se venderá entre 120 000 y 160 000 € (131 367 $ – 175 156 $ al tipo de cambio actual) cuando salga a la venta el 30 de junio en la Le Mans Classic Sale de 2023.

At around this time, Goodwin allegedly walked into his home one day to find his wife, Jamaica, in bed with one of his mechanics. The exact circumstances are murky, but Goodwin shot and killed his wife, in what would come to be ruled voluntary manslaughter later in court."

According to Silodrome, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, but would never see freedom again, dying of a massive heart attack a few months later. Although the company lives on to this day, that was the end of the line for the short-lived Centurion."

The number of bodies that Fiberfab managed to make is not known, but is likely less than 12. This one may also be the only one in Europe, having been purchased at a Barrett-Jackson auction in 2018, and exported to Andorra, per Artcurial, which is handling the auction of this model.
